Greater Giyani mayor Cllr Basani Shibambu has honoured the promise she made in 2019 during her back-to-school campaign to award students that would pass well at Khomani Mbhalati High School, Munghonghoma village.
The mayor had adopted the school and promised to supply the grade 12s with learning material as well as award the best learner as part of motivating them to do well at the end of the year. Her intervention comes after the school had performed poorly on the previous year.
The strategy worked…the school later got 95% pass rate, but dropped to 45% last year due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, which disturbed the normal learning process at the school. This also disturbed the promised awards ceremony that had been planned for those that would pass well in the 2019 and 2020 final year exams.
Taking advantage of her birthday, the mayor forged ahead with her plans for the school, and awarded students that did well with laptops and trophies before she went outside to do some renovation work on two blocks where some of the wall plasters were falling off due to age.
While handing over the awards at the school, the mayor had an opportunity to meet Vutivi Makhubele, one of the learners who did well during the 2019 final year exams after her motivation. Vutivi was now an adult doing a second-year practicals for teaching qualification at the school.
“This is impressive, and I’m happy that you have taken your education seriously, and this should serve as motivation to other learners here in this school,” said the mayor as she handed her a trophy for her achievement.
